Haribo Gold-Bears are the original gummi bear. Invented in 1922, the Gold-Bear was originally called the “Dancing Bear”. Haribo Gold-Bears are a mixed delight of white/pineapple, green/strawberry, yellow/lemon, orange/orange and red/raspberry gummi bears. Haribo, founded in 1920 in Bonn, Germany by Hans Riegel, is one of the most prominent manufacturers of sweets (namely fruit gums, licorice, and foam) in the world. The company name is an acronym for “Hans Riegel, Bonn” and stands as a reminder of Haribo’s continuing loyalty to early traditions. After Hans Riegel died during World War II, his son, also named Hans Riegel, took over the factory and expanded its operations, taking over many local confectionery manufacturers in countries all over the world. Currently, Haribo operates five factories in Germany and 13 throughout the rest of Europe. The company also has sales offices in almost every country in Europe as well as in the Unites States. Haribo’s German catch phrase is “Haribo macht kinder froh / und Erwachsene ebenso,” which translates as “Kids and grown-ups love it so / the happy world of Haribo.”

Hans Riegel was not only one of the most prominent manufacturer’s of sweets, he introduced a product to the world that’s far more addictive than crack or heroine. These sweet little gummies are some of the tastiest bits of candy on the market. Unfortunately they’re addictive as well…my son foams at the mouth, begging for gummies at all hours. At times this works to our advantage…bribery, a la the Scooby Snack. However, we know these are not the most nutritious snacks on the market.

I have been hooked on these gummi bears for years! I used to work on an Army base and whenever one of our soldiers would go TDY to Germany, we would make him bring these back for us!! I’d tried different types after I left the base, but couldn’t find the particular flavor. When I did happen upon it, I was so happy to discover Haribo brand again! Yay, go Gummi Bearen.

I absolutely love these candies. I cannot get enough of them and when I read about someone buying a 5lb bag on Amazon I checked it out and bought 12-5 oz bags. I feel it would be easier to carry with you to the movies, or work with smaller packages. The amount of money you save buying in bulk on amazon as opposed to stores in great and was enought o convince me. No other gummi bear compares in flavor and quality. Every other one seems to scratch my throat or taste too acidic and like cough medicine. Haribo on the other hand is gummy gummi bear goodness and like one other review said they are very versatile as they can be eaten by themselves, on top of ice cream, frozen in home-made ice cream, made in cakes, or part of decorative gingerbread houses you can do many things with this simple, great-tasting candy.

I used to buy these for my daughters when I was stationed overseas and would go on temporary duty assignments to Germany. Everytime I came home they always knew they would have more gummi bears. They have been doing nothing but remembering the gummi bears this year so as a christmas treat I decided to buy them some and if it’s a big hit, it may be a new christmas tradition for not only them but my grandson too.

I am somewhat of a gummi connoisseur of the gummi candy. I consider the gummi it’s own food group. (If not, what group does it belong in?) Anyway, after searching and sampling bear after bear across the globe, the Haribo are the best ever. The flavor and more importantly the consistency of the gummi is perfect. They are not too soft, so some of the cheap store brands and they are not too hard or solid to where you can’t chew them easily. I ate these overseas years ago and every time I traveled to Europe, I would bring home a stash. I found that Amazon now carries them, so I am in heaven. When I bring bags to work to share, they disappear faster than any other candy. Really a treat. People laugh when I tell them Haribo is the best gummi bear ever, but once they try them, they all agree with me.
